Our historical photographs of the Golden Gate Bridge focus on its construction. Designed by Joseph Baerman Strauss and built during the Great Depression, it remains one of the world's great engineering feats connecting San Francisco to Marin Country. Work on the Golden Gate Bridge began on 1/5/33 was opened to pedestrians on 5/27/37 and, after the opening ceremonies, to vehicular traffic the following day.

This old photo shows fishermen on Baker Beach in San Francisco and their excellent view of the Golden Gate Bridge construction. This picture also illustrates how the roadway was extended from the towers symmetrically to keep the structure balanced.

See this photo as part of a triple photo version.
