San Francisco-Cliff House, Sutro & Fairs - Photos

Arch of the Rising Sun, a temporary structure built for the Pan Pacific International Exhibition held in 1915. The 1915 fair was held to show the world that San Francisco was now rebuilt after the destruction of the 1906 earthquake.

The story goes that the woman riding sidesaddle set up the photograph and was an infamous free spirit.

This photo shows people fully dressed for a cool day at the beach. The Cliff House stands majestically in the background.

This was the second of five Cliff Houses built on the same site. This one was constructed in 1898, survived the 1906 earthquake and burned down the following year.

This photograph was taken by a Japanese photographer named Imai. He waited for the light to be right and captured the Cliff House in a unique light that looks like lightning.

The Sutro Baths had 9 heated pools filled with sea water. Patrons had to rent woolen bathing suits in order to swim there.
