The Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian Walkway
This photo shows the Brooklyn Bridge as the main link between Brooklyn and Manhattan for pedestrians as well as horse-drawn vehicles. When the Brooklyn Bridge was first completed in 1883, the residents of New York City were able to see the skyline of Manhattan from above for the first time. This engineering feat was completed in the days before the internal combustion engine so all the construction materials were hauled by horse and wagon.

This vintage photo shows the wooden walkway pedestrians used to walk across the bridge. The walkway is still used today (the wooden slats now run perpendicular to the bridge)and is popular with tourists.
