This was the second of five Cliff Houses built on the same site. This one was constructed in 1898, survived the 1906 earthquake and burned down the following year.

This photograph was taken by a Japanese photographer named Imai. He waited for the light to be right and captured the Cliff House in a unique light that looks like lightning.
